March 23, 2010

Ben and Jerry’s at Mohegan Sun’s Fundraiser.  $1.00 from every waffle cone purchased on March 23, 2010, from noon to midnight was donated to the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center.  They raised $870, more than a $100 increase from last year. The employee dress-up theme was “lumber jacks”. They worked the day before to prepare the waffle cones for the fundraiser and all the next day.

Jim Kelly, Food Center Board Chair presented a plaque to Achille “Kelly” Massaro in appreciation of his dedication and volunteer service for over (20) years.

Food Center provided support by storing food and supplies for an Eagle Scout candidate’s project to aid Haiti.  1,000 volunteers will package 285,000 meals on Saturday at Fitch High School for Haiti. The Salvation Army’s World Service has raised $85,000 to purchase food and ship it to Haiti.

Buzzutos’ Food Supplier donated 46,000 pounds of food to the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center after a food show at Foxwoods casino.

Letter Carriers’ Food Drive.  Put your non-perishable donations in a bag by your mailbox.  They’ll deliver it to the Local Food Bank.

February 16, 2010

The New London Community Development Block Grant again made a preliminary award of $15,000 to the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center Food Center to purchase nutritious food for those in need.  Final contracts will be executed on July 1, 2010.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded the Food Center $20,000 for emergency food for those in need.

February 2010

ShopRite again awarded the Food Center with a $20,000 grant to purchase necessary food for those in need.
